Annual or Single Trip Travel Insurance Policies

Annual multi-trip travel insurance covers all trips made during the year, up to a maximum number of days away (remember to check this number before buying a policy, as it varies from insurer to insurer). This can be for trips to Europe, which is usually cheaper, or for worldwide destinations and can also include ski and winter sports cover.

Single trip travel insurance covers you for (you guessed it) a single trip, either in the UK or abroad. The price of these policies depends on where you're travelling to, as different countries have varying costs of medical treatment and also different safety risks. You can get single trip cover from as little as £5.85 for 1 adult going on holiday in the UK for 5 days, but policies can last up to 31 days and can cover you and your family for trips worldwide.

Based on the rates from our instant price tables, if you're going away less than twice in a year it's usually better value to go for single trip policies.

However, there's an exception to this rule:
If you're going somewhere with high medical costs, like the USA, then it's often better to go for annual cover, as the high premium you would have to pay for a single trip policy is brought down to an average level by cheaper destinations.

Remember, as with any insurance policy, always read the policy detail to make sure you are properly covered before buying.
